Acclaim for Wonderland
The new album from the Julie July Band Wonderland is a veritable feast of riches within the folk-rock genre. The songs are fully formed melodic works of art delivered with a confidence and clarity which only years of ensemble playing produce. The playing is tight and disciplined and the arrangements are taut and atmospheric adding spice and zest to the proceedings. Above it, Julie July’s clear bell like tones rise and reign supreme.

The songs vary from acoustic ballads to up tempo rockers with equal doses of folk, rock and progressive styling’s that frame the lyrical content and make each song a uniquely personalised performance. Guitarists Steve Rezillo, and Caley Groves provide a perfect balance between jagged electricity and soaring acoustics while ex Decameron bassist Dik Cadbury anchors the sound solidly with drummer Mick Candler forming a powerful yet subtle rhythm section and Carol Lee Sampson’s keyboards add the solar icing while she compliments Julie’s powerful and authoritative vocals making a powerfully tight and cohesive unit. To say that Julie July can inhabit a song is no mere understatement as the title track Wonderland, Standing on the Edge of the World and Seven Cities of Gold display. Here her voice soars high and proud sounding not unlike Sandy Denny and Annie Haslam. The songs are finely honed gems of observation and worked into diamond sharp performances that demand attention. The development and growth of Julie July and her band has been both heartening and momentous as Wonderland displays conclusively. This is 2022 style contemporary British Progressive Folk Rock delivered with style and conviction.
